Volkswagen Recalls 94,000 EVs Due to Battery Safety Concerns

[Safety Recall] Volkswagen is recalling 94,031 electric vehicles due to a defect in high-voltage battery modules, affecting the ID series and the Cupra Born.

Core Development: Thermal Runaway Risk Triggers Global Recall

Of the 94,031 affected vehicles, 74,579 are Volkswagen ID.3/ID.4/ID.5/ID.Buzz models and 19,452 are SEAT Cupra Born units, all produced between February 2022 and August 2024. Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) stated that certain high-voltage battery modules do not comply with technical specifications, potentially leading to thermal runaway or even fire.

Key Actions: Dual Approach of Software Update and Hardware Replacement

Volkswagen will deploy a software update, inspect the high-voltage batteries, and replace battery modules free of charge where necessary. Approximately 28,000 vehicles in Germany fall under this recall. Owners are advised to temporarily avoid using DC fast charging and to limit charging to 80% capacity.

Industry Impact: Delayed Supply Chain Response Raises Concerns

Dealers report that Volkswagen has not yet provided clear timelines for the delivery of specialized tools and replacement parts, creating uncertainty around repair scheduling. No injuries or fatalities have been reported so far, but the incident highlights new challenges in battery quality control and after-sales coordination as electric vehicle production scales up.
