Zeng Yuqun: Mass Adoption of Solid-State Batteries in Vehicles Unlikely Before 2030
[Technology Outlook] Zeng Yuqun, Chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), stated that achieving vehicle integration of solid-state batteries at a scale of one million units before 2030 is "highly unlikely."
Core Development: Industrialization Still in Early Stage
Zeng emphasized that all-solid-state batteries must feature fully solid electrolytes under ambient temperature and pressure. Current technological maturity stands only at stage 4 out of 9, indicating a significant gap remains before commercialization.
Key Milestone: Potential Pilot-Scale Breakthrough by 2027
Dr. Wu Kai, Chief Scientist at CATL, previously noted the company aims to advance the technology to stages 7–8 by 2027, enabling pilot-scale production. However, cost and performance remain major barriers to large-scale adoption.
Strategic Principle: Avoid Pursuing Solid-State for Its Own Sake
Zeng cautioned that solid-state battery development should focus on real-world requirements rather than blindly chasing the concept, and must await substantive breakthroughs in several key technical challenges.
