Samsung SDI to Invest 25 Trillion KRW in Expanding Next-Generation Battery Production
[Investment and Capacity Expansion] Samsung SDI announced plans to invest 25 trillion KRW over the next 14 years to scale up production of all-solid-state, sodium-ion, and LFP batteries.
Core Initiative: Mass Production of All-Solid-State Batteries in Second Half of 2027
Samsung SDI aims to begin mass production of all-solid-state batteries in the second half of 2027, with prototypes already undergoing performance evaluation in electric vehicles and humanoid robots. The Ulsan facility will receive an investment of 16 trillion KRW to build large-scale production lines for these three battery types.
Strategic Foundation: Cheonan Plant as Global Mother Factory
The Cheonan plant will receive 9 trillion KRW in investment to establish a next-generation battery validation pilot line and a dry electrode pilot line named DryEV, overcoming cost limitations of conventional wet-process manufacturing and enhancing R&D and technology validation capabilities.
Key Figures: Total Investment Reaches USD 18 Billion
The total investment amounts to approximately 25 trillion KRW (equivalent to USD 18 billion or RMB 110 billion), spanning through 2040, with a focus on energy storage and emerging battery technologies.
