Nine Departments Promote Innovative Development of the Internet of Things
[Policy Announcement] The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and eight other departments have jointly issued the 'Action Plan for Promoting Innovative Development of the Internet of Things Industry (2026–2028).'
Core Trend: IoT Connections to Reach Tens of Billions by 2028
By 2028, the number of IoT terminal connections is targeted to reach a scale of tens of billions, fostering 10 application sectors with hundreds of millions of connections each and 15 application sectors with tens of millions of connections each, while pushing the core industry scale beyond RMB 3.5 trillion.
Key Metrics: Dual Breakthroughs in Standards and Technology
The plan aims to formulate or revise over 50 advanced and applicable standards, achieve breakthroughs in key technologies—including sensing, networking and communications, data processing, and security—and significantly enhance the intelligence levels of terminals and platforms.
Strategic Foundation: Addressing Bottlenecks and Ecosystem Fragmentation
To tackle challenges such as reliance on foreign core technologies, difficulties in device interoperability, and escalating security risks, the Action Plan outlines five key measures: upgrading devices, enhancing platform efficiency, cultivating application scenarios, strengthening network infrastructure, and building a cohesive ecosystem. These efforts will accelerate the integration of IoT with AI, driving the transition from 'everything connected' to 'ubiquitous intelligent connectivity.'
