Hitachi, Ricoh, and Seven Other Companies Launch Modular Battery Factory

[Supply Chain Collaboration] Hitachi, Ricoh, and seven other Japanese lithium battery equipment manufacturers have jointly established Swiftfab Energy Systems to introduce containerized, modular battery production lines.

Core Development: Modular Factories Can Reduce Costs by 70%

Swiftfab was formed in April 2026 by nine core Japanese companies in the battery supply chain—including Hitachi, Ricoh, and JTEKT (a Toyota Group company)—to deliver plug-and-play lithium battery factory solutions. The entire production line is packaged into standardized shipping-container-sized modules, enabling customers to rapidly assemble and commission facilities like building with Lego blocks.

Key Metrics: 1,000 Modules Support Annual Production for 50,000 EVs

A battery factory capable of producing enough cells annually for 50,000 electric vehicles requires only about 1,000 modular units. This approach is expected to cut total equipment investment by approximately 70%, significantly enhancing the cost competitiveness of Japan’s battery industry.

Strategic Rationale: Countering China’s Manufacturing Scale Advantage

By breaking down the complex lithium battery manufacturing process into standardized units, Japan aims to leapfrog competitors through a flexible, low-cost factory deployment model, thereby reshaping the global battery manufacturing landscape.
