Volkswagen Plans Global Layoffs of 100,000 and Plant Closures

[Corporate Restructuring] Volkswagen Group plans to cut up to 100,000 jobs globally and close four plants in Germany over the coming years.

Core Strategy: Cutting 50,000 Jobs in Germany by 2030, Targeting €11 Billion in Cost Reductions

Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume has unveiled a "Vision 2030" strategy aiming to reduce indirect costs by €11 billion. In Germany alone, the company has already negotiated the departure of more than 28,000 employees, with approximately 19,000 of those adjustments scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. Ultimately, total job cuts in Germany could reach 50,000.

Strategic Rationale: Organizational Streamlining Driven by Pressure from EV Transition

The additional layoffs will affect Audi, Porsche, and software subsidiary Cariad. Plants slated for closure include facilities in Hanover, Zwickau, and Audi’s Neckarsulm site, though specific timelines have not yet been finalized.

Industry Impact: Strong Union Opposition; Plan Awaits Board Approval

Germany's metalworkers' union (IG Metall) and Volkswagen’s works council have jointly declared they will "do everything possible to stop" the plan. The proposal remains under discussion and has not yet received formal approval from the board; the company has not issued an official response.
