Tesla Officially Abandons Plans to Build Factory in India
[Company Update] Tesla has officially terminated its plan to build a factory in India.
Core Development: Negotiation Deadlock and Supply Chain Weaknesses Lead to Project Suspension
India's Minister of Heavy Industries confirmed that Tesla has abandoned its factory construction plans. A key obstacle was the prolonged inability of both sides to agree on whether tariffs should be reduced first or the factory built first.
Key Data: Market and Cost Pressures Mount
India imposes import tariffs on electric vehicles as high as 70%–110%. In 2025, Tesla’s total annual sales in India amounted to only 227 units. Local localization rates for core EV components (battery, motor, and power electronics) are below 15%, and battery costs are 41% higher than in China.
Strategic Foundation: Premium Positioning Mismatches Local Purchasing Power
India’s automotive market is dominated by low-cost vehicles, which misaligns with Tesla’s premium offerings such as the Model Y. Combined with weak infrastructure and policy uncertainty, these factors ultimately led Tesla to withdraw from its factory plans.
