NIO Responds to ES9 Paint Peeling Controversy After Car Wash

[Quality Dispute] NIO's ES9 has been reported to suffer front bumper paint peeling after being washed with a high-pressure water gun. The company clarified that the issue resulted from improper operation.

Core Development: Not a Quality Defect, Caused by Excessively Close-Range Rinsing

On June 29, NIO stated that the ES9’s front bumper is supplied by a leading vendor and its paint finish complies with international standards such as ISO 16925 and SAE J400-2002, while also adhering to internal control standards stricter than ISO 2808.

Key Data: Safe Distance and Pressure Threshold Clearly Defined

The company noted that when the nozzle of a high-pressure washer is held less than 200 millimeters from the vehicle body, localized pressure can exceed 100 bar. Under such conditions, the shear force of the water stream is equivalent to abrasion by hard objects, easily damaging the paint adhesion structure; if the water contains sand or grit, the damage is further exacerbated.

Strategic Foundation: Strengthening User Education on Proper Usage

NIO emphasized that its production process includes comprehensive monthly inspections and annual aging tests to ensure coating durability. The company also urges owners to follow proper car-washing procedures and avoid high-pressure, close-range rinsing.
