Jeep Relaunches Local Production in China via Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobile
[Brand Return] Jeep will resume local production in China for the third time through Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobile (DPCA), with two new energy off-road vehicles scheduled to enter production in 2027.
Core Development: Chinese-led New Joint Venture Model
On May 15, 2026, six parties—including Dongfeng Motor Group, Stellantis, Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobile (DPCA), and Hubei state-owned capital—signed an agreement with a total investment exceeding RMB 8 billion, of which Chinese capital accounts for 87% and foreign investment only 13%, establishing a reverse collaboration model combining "Chinese technology + foreign brand."
Strategic Foundation: Focus on New Energy and Global Markets
The new vehicles will be built on Dongfeng’s new energy platform, with Chinese partners leading the development of the triple electric systems (battery, motor, and electronic control) and smart cockpit, while Stellantis handles styling and chassis tuning. Starting in 2027, DPCA’s Wuhan plant will simultaneously produce two Jeep and two Peugeot new energy models for global markets.
Industry Impact: Jeep’s Third Attempt in China
Previously, Jeep experienced two failed localization attempts: first through Beijing Jeep (peak annual sales of 82,000 units) and later through GAC Fiat Chrysler (sales peaked at 222,000 units in 2017 before its bankruptcy in 2022). This marks Jeep’s renewed effort to re-enter the Chinese market under an entirely new partnership model.
