Hubei University of Automotive Industry Plans to Rename as Hubei Automotive Industry University
[University Upgrade] Hubei University of Automotive Industry is planning to rename itself as Hubei Automotive Industry University. The proposal has passed provincial-level review and is now in the final approval stage at the Ministry of Education.
Key Development: China May Soon Have Its First Regular Undergraduate University Named After 'Automotive'
If approved in the first half of 2026, Hubei Automotive Industry University will become the nation's first regular undergraduate university with "automotive" in its name. Currently, only three vocational undergraduate institutions include the word "automotive": Changchun Automotive Vocational and Technical University, Hunan Automotive Engineering Vocational University, and Xi'an Automotive Vocational University.
Strategic Rationale: Addressing the Gap in High-End Talent Development for the Automotive Industry
The university is located in Shiyan City, adjacent to the birthplace of Dongfeng Motor Corporation. Official plans explicitly support its upgrade to a full-fledged university and its pursuit of doctoral degree-granting authority. Notably, there was previously a Wuhan Automotive Industry University (1995–2000), which later merged into Wuhan University of Technology—a former "Project 211" institution—making its historical context distinct from the current initiative.
