Geely to Acquire Ford's Production Line at Spanish Plant

[Global Expansion] Geely will acquire Body Shop Assembly Line No. 3 at Ford’s Almussafes plant in Valencia, Spain.

Core Development: Geely Leverages Highly Automated Line to Accelerate New Energy Vehicle Rollout in Europe

The assembly line, built a decade ago, was previously used to produce the Ford Galaxy, Mondeo, and S-Max. It has been idle for an extended period following the discontinuation of these models. Requiring only 100 employees per shift, the line features extremely high automation, enabling Geely to rapidly launch production while maintaining cost efficiency.

Key Details: New Model Based on GEA Architecture, Offering Three Powertrain Options

Geely plans to produce a new vehicle codenamed "135" at this facility, built on the GEA Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture, with hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric variants. Additionally, both parties are negotiating a deal for Geely to contract-manufacture another new model for Ford on the same platform.

Strategic Rationale: Chinese Automakers Accelerate Overseas Capacity Integration

Following a trend of multiple Chinese automakers acquiring idle overseas assets, Geely’s move aims to fill the capacity gap at Ford’s plant—originally designed for 400,000 units annually but projected to produce only 98,500 units of the Kuga in 2025—thereby strengthening its localized manufacturing capabilities in the European market.
