First Batch of Chinese EVs Arrives in Canada

[International Update] The first batch of Chinese-made electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles has arrived in Canada, capitalizing on the new tariff window.

Key Developments: Chery and Geely Lead with Physical Vehicle Deliveries

Chery shipped approximately 150 units of the Jaecoo J5, Omoda 9, and Exelantis ES for testing and test drives; Lotus Eletre, under Geely, became the first Chinese premium electric SUV to pass CMVSS certification and be shipped fully assembled, with the first batch of 18 units already delivered to Canada.

Key Figures: 49,000-unit quota + 6.1% tariff

Starting in 2026, Canada will allow up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles per year to enter at a tariff rate of 6.1%, significantly lower than the previous rate of 106.1%. Chery plans to ship another 1,000 units within three months, and its first 10 dealerships will be operational by the end of June; Lotus has already opened 6 authorized stores in Canada and plans to expand to 12 by year-end.
