BMW Invests $1.7 Billion in U.S. Plant to Launch All-Electric iX5 SUV

[Production Capacity Layout] BMW has completed its $1.7 billion investment in its U.S. plant, enabling the all-new X5 to be produced on a single line with five powertrain variants.

Key Development: iX5 Becomes First U.S.-Built All-Electric SUV

On June 30, 2026, the BMW Group announced it has fully committed $1.7 billion to electrify its Spartanburg facility in South Carolina. The all-new fifth-generation X5 (G65) becomes the brand’s first model to integrate five powertrain types—gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, all-electric (iX5), and hydrogen fuel cell—on a single production line.

Strategic Foundation: Flexible Manufacturing Enables Open Technology Pathway

Leveraging the newly built Woodruff Gen6 battery pack plant and an 800V high-voltage platform, the iX5 will enter production by the end of 2026, offering a range exceeding 500 miles. The facility is also piloting Figure’s exoskeleton humanoid robots to optimize logistics, reinforcing BMW’s manufacturing resilience as the largest automotive exporter in the United States.
